Integration assistance for adults
Benefits for a self-determined life under §§ 90 ff. SGB IX and the Berlin Participation Act – Berlin-wide.
Living self-determined – with the support that fits
Adults with a substantial and not merely temporary disability are entitled to integration assistance. The benefits are intended to make a self-determined life possible and to support equal participation in community life. What matters is the individual participation need and belonging to the eligible group under § 99 SGB IX.
Which support fits your situation is determined together in the participation planning procedure — guided by your goals, your strengths and your everyday life.
Four areas of participation
Social participation
Assistance such as individual case support, personal support in your own home (assisted individual living), living in shared flats or special forms of housing, day centres and psychosocial support.
Participation in working life
Work in a sheltered workshop, employment and support measures, and the budget for training or work.
Medical rehabilitation
Medical rehabilitation benefits where no other rehabilitation provider has primary responsibility.
Participation in education
Support for school, university and vocational training where no other provider covers the costs.
Five steps to your application
Advice
Contact the participation service (Teilhabefachdienst) at your district social welfare office. There your needs and the matching benefits are discussed.
Submit the application
The application can be submitted online or by post.
Provide documents
Complete the form in full and attach the required supporting documents.
Review
The participation service reviews your application and gets in touch if documents are missing.
Decision
You receive a written decision.
Required documents
Application form, valid ID, proof of health and long-term care insurance, decisions from other providers, disability certificate (if applicable), proof of income and proof of assets. The exact scope depends on your individual case. Online uploads are limited to 30 MB in total and 5 MB per file, in JPG, JPEG, PNG or PDF format.
Costs
There is no fee for submitting an application. Whether and how much you contribute to the cost depends on income and assets and is assessed case by case; generous allowances apply to many social-participation benefits.
The social welfare offices of the Berlin districts are responsible. For benefits outside Berlin and for special assistance models, the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LAGeSo) is responsible. The binding information from the State of Berlin can be found in the Berlin service portal.
